Let’s talk about five reasons you should live in Oklahoma. These aren’t necessarily the top 5 reasons you should live in Oklahoma, but may be some reasons you hadn’t considered before.
Let’s talk about why you should live in Oklahoma!
I sat down with my good friend Stacey, a real estate agent from Ardmore, the other day and we got to talking about the reasons why living in Oklahoma is such a great idea and we came up with 5 reasons why you should live in Oklahoma. Stacey grew up in Eagle River, a suburb of Anchorage in Alaska, and has lived in several places, including Oklahoma City and Ada, before settling in Ardmore. I, on the other hand, have been living in Norman since 2007 and was originally from a town called Claremore in Northeastern Oklahoma. Sharing our experiences, we came up with five compelling reasons why Oklahoma is an amazing place to call home.
Stacey has her own YouTube channel and she lives in Ardmore, OK. So, we’re both Keller Williams Mulinix agents; we just are from two different offices in two different parts of Oklahoma. Stacey, and I also did a video together for her channel on Rural Versus Urban Living in Oklahoma, so I’m going to link that at the end for you. Please go check that out, watch, and subscribe to her channel! And if you prefer video format, you can click this link to watch this blog topic on my channel: 5 Reasons YOU Should Live in Oklahoma !
1. First Reason YOU Should Live in Oklahoma: SUNNY ☀️
As Stacey and I chatted, we got to the first point that we wanted to make about Oklahoma: it’s a very sunny state. Stacey pointed out that, coming from Alaska, where the clouds can be low and gray for weeks on end, she appreciates the constant sunshine in Oklahoma. In fact, Oklahoma is the seventh sunniest state in the United States, which is great news for those who love basking in the sun. Stacey also noted that the abundance of sunshine makes Oklahoma an excellent place for solar energy.
In my own neighborhood, I’ve noticed more and more homes installing solar panels, which not only provide guaranteed energy throughout the year but can also save homeowners money on their energy bills. Continuing on the topic of weather, we also acknowledged that, while tornadoes may be a concern for some, flood zones are a much bigger concern in Oklahoma, particularly in areas with lots of concrete or our infamous red clay that don’t absorb water well. So, while we enjoy the sunshine, we also recognize the importance of being mindful of potential dangers during rainy periods.
2. Second Reason YOU Should Live in Oklahoma: Centrally Located 📍
Stacey and I continued our chat and moved on to our second point: Oklahoma’s central location. As Stacey pointed out, her hometown of Ardmore is right in the middle of Oklahoma City and Dallas, making it a convenient spot for those who enjoy road trips. Being located in the center of the country also means that it’s relatively easy to travel to either coast, with a day and a half or two days of driving time required.
We both agreed that, while we appreciate road trips, there are times when flying is the more practical option, and luckily, there are plenty of airports to choose from, including Oklahoma City’s Will Rogers World Airport and the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
We also noted that, while Oklahoma City is located in the middle of the state, other cities like Tulsa are closer to Kansas City, which is about five hours away. And Denver is about a day’s drive away for most people, although flying may be the more convenient option. All in all, we concluded that Oklahoma’s central location makes it a great place for those who enjoy exploring different parts of the country.
3. Third Reason YOU Should Live in Oklahoma: Business Oriented 👨💼
Moving on to our third point, Stacey and I discussed how business-oriented Oklahoma is. Oklahoma City, for instance, ranks 12th in the nation as one of the best places for startups, a fact that we find impressive. Stacey pointed out that Oklahoma also has a low corporate tax rate, which makes it an attractive place for businesses. The lower cost of living in Oklahoma is another factor that makes it appealing for startups, as it allows them to keep their payroll costs down – that’s always a bonus!
However, we did caution that if you’re considering a move to Oklahoma, it’s important to keep in mind that the lower salaries are reflective of the lower cost of living in the state. In addition, we noted that Oklahoma City saw a steady increase in employment rates over the past few years, even during the pandemic, which is a good sign for anyone looking to start a business or find work in the state. Overall, we agreed that Oklahoma’s business-friendly environment makes it a great place to consider for anyone looking to launch a startup or find work in a thriving economy.
4. Fourth Reason YOU Should Live in Oklahoma: Medicine 🏥
Our fourth point is about medicinal marijuana, which has become quite popular in Oklahoma. And actually, Oklahoma has more dispensaries per capita than any other state, which is pretty impressive. Stacey and I both agree that it’s not uncommon to see dispensaries popping up all over the place, and we’ve both seen a fair share of them on our travels throughout the state.
We were both surprised to see how prevalent medicinal marijuana has become in a state that is typically seen as very conservative. While it’s true that Oklahoma is a red state, it has legalized the use of medicinal marijuana, and we’ve both noticed that it’s become a big draw for people who are interested in growing it, selling it, or using it. However, it’s worth noting that there are some restrictions in place, particularly in more populated areas like Norman, where grow farms are not allowed.
That being said, if you venture outside of city limits, you’re likely to see plenty of grow operations on smaller plots of land. Basically, we concluded that medicinal marijuana has become a big part of the culture in Oklahoma and is definitely something to consider if you’re interested in exploring alternative medicine options.
5. Fifth Reason YOU Should Live in Oklahoma: Access to Property 🏡
As we discussed earlier, Oklahoma offers a lot of opportunities for outdoor activities, and one of the biggest draws is the availability of land. Stacey said, coming from Alaska, they have a lot of government-owned land, like A LOT. However, Oklahoma is mostly privately owned, so although there may be more restrictions because it’s being used as ranch and pasture land, there are still plenty of opportunities for land for sale or lease. Whether you’re looking to start a ranch, farm, or just want a large piece of property to call your own, Oklahoma has plenty of options. In fact, there are more than 250,000 farms in the state, which means there’s a lot of land being put to use for agriculture, hunting, and other activities.
But it’s not just about what you can do on the land – it’s also about the access you have to it. Hunting leases, for example, are very common in Oklahoma, and many landowners lease out their land for grazing, recreation, and other purposes. This can be a great way to get access to land for a lower cost, and it’s a good way to meet other people who share your interests.
Of course, not everyone is looking to start a farm or ranch, but even if you just want a place to get away from the city, Oklahoma has a lot to offer. There are plenty of camping and hiking opportunities, as well as lakes and rivers for fishing and water sports. And if you’re looking for something a little more exciting, there are plenty of hunting and ATV trails to explore.
So whether you’re looking to start a new venture or just want a place to enjoy the outdoors, Oklahoma has a lot to offer.
